Coaches "Pet Peeves"

One of the "down sides" of wrestling at Wilson is that our wrestlers are unavoidably exposed to the coaching staff's "pet peeves" as we spout off during the wrestling season. Some of these matters are serious... and others obviously are not.  You decide for yourself.  In any case, the following is an abbreviated list that may some day find itself in "the book" (inside joke):

  • The present rules in wrestling that enable (i.e., encourage) wrestlers to use the edge of the mat to avoid being scored upon.  If there was a rule whereby a wrestler would be penalized if he goes out of bounds while under attack, competitors would be fighting to stay IN bounds... rather than fighting to go OUT!

  • When our wrestlers try to get out of bounds rather than aggressively counter a takedown.

  • Wrestlers who actually "look for blood" SOMEWHERE... ANYWHERE... EVEN ON THEIR OPPONENT... to get a break during a bout WITHOUT having to use an injury time.

  • Schools that don't flip their mats over before they roll them up and store them. When the mats are rolled out in the gym, this causes them to have large unsightly "curls" at both ends over which someone inevitably trips.

  • Wrestlers who throw "hissy fits" when they lose

  • When the mats are taped together, the circles of the mat sections don't match.

  • When a wrestler loses a tough match in a tournament, they walk off the mat... WITHOUT going to their coaches first (sign of a brat and a poor sport).

  • Fans who make their entire community look bad by "booing" opponents.

  • Coaches who complain about EVERY call that doesn't go their way thus making the referee's life miserable... and then wonder where all the good officials have gone (DUH!).

  • Coaches who are "SCREAMERS!"

  • Fans who are not quiet and respectful during the playing of our National Anthem.

  • Wrestlers who "mysteriously" seem to get an invisible injury during one or more of the following situations:

            ~when they are tired

~when they are about to get scored upon

~when they are about to go toward... or are already                  on their back

  • People who don't understand that wrestling is more than just "moves" and "who wins"
