Preseason Comments:The Wilson Warriors' wrestling team is preparing to embark on the 2000-2001 wrestling season. We have the largest number of wrestlers ever working out readying themselves for the challenges that await. One aspect of that preparation took place this summer as 23 Wilson wrestlers participated in the Lock Haven University Team Camp during the week of July 16-20. This gave us enough wrestlers for almost two teams. One team wrestled 14 dual meets and finished the week 14-0!! The other team also had a very successful week. Some preseason rankings are already out and Wrestling USA Magazine has ranked the Warriors 24th in the nation. However, as we all know, what really matters is how we perform on the mats. But, it is nice to get a little recognition once in a while. Returning for Wilson are ten district, four regional and two state place winners. However, our schedule will be very demanding. In addition to the Colonial League meets, we will be wrestling in our own Wilson Invitational, Delaware's "Beast of the East" tournament, the Bethlehem Classic at Liberty H.S., the Brookville Duals, an independent dual meet with Nazareth,....AND...the dual meet that really has local fans talking....WILSON vs. EASTON on December 9th. The big news this year for District XI AA is the change in the regional format. This is the third change in the last four years. If you recall, in 1996-97 our region (then the southeast) had its qualifiers to the state tournament reduced from three to two. This precipitated a reconfiguration in 1998-99 whereby District XI moved to the Northeast region where we then qualified five wrestlers per weight class to Hershey. Beginning this season, District XI AA will return to the Southeast region. In addition to District XI, the Southeast will include Districts I and III from which will come five qualifiers to states. District representatives are looking in the Reading area for the site of this year's tournament. |
